Cigarette Fire, Here We Come To Help

2/12/2022 (Permalink)

When approaching this Rancho Cucamonga condominium, our fire restoration technicians could still smell the recent blaze from down the street. When they approached the entrance, they immediately had to put on masks since the smell was so strong.

The fire was caused by a cigarette that was still lit. The owner thought he had put it out before he took a nap, but unfortunately that was not the case. Thank goodness he was safe and sound, but from a small ember of the cigarette, it lit a curtain on fire. After quickly extinguishing it, he gave us a call right away. After inspecting the damage, we got to work. We cleaned the entire affected bedroom with our specialty products. We used our SERVPRO sponges to clean all the soot and ash off the walls, cleaned out the HVAC and air ducts as well as fogged afterwards to make sure the smoke smell was no longer there. The owner was very pleased when he found his home just the way it used to be.

Accidents happen all the time. If you have recently been victimized by a fire in your home or office, give us a call at 909-399-9057 to schedule an inspection – we are here to help.

Claremont/Montclair Smoke and Soot Cleanup

1/29/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vehicles Always Ready For You

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Claremont/Montclair will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

The Difference Between a Smoke Detector and a Fire Alarm

1/29/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke Detector A smoke detector can detect early signs of smoke and potentially save lives.

We have all heard the terms smoke detector and fire alarm floating around television, radio and the internet but what is the difference? Well, one thing is for sure – they both have very important jobs. If you look at each one, you will discover that it is all in the name.

Detecting Smoke

A smoke detector in a nutshell, detects smoke or fire in its earliest stages. This is a terrific device for a number of reasons including fast warning to evacuate the premises. This can avoid smoke inhalation, which causes more deadly disasters than the actual fire itself. These small, inexpensive devices can play a vital role in the safety of your loved ones at home or in the workplace.

Sound the (Fire) Alarm

The great thing about fire alarms is that they can detect when fires are present by monitoring the environment for changes related to combustion. They like fire alarms, can also detect smoke. This is one trait that is commonly mistaken with smoke alarms. Fire alarms are usually found in commercial buildings and for good reason. They can be activated to trigger sprinkler systems and alert the fire department.

If a recent fire accident has caused a bad odor from the smoke, we can help. Give us a call at 909-399-9057 twenty-four hours a day.

Storm Damage and What NOT To Do

1/26/2022 (Permalink)

Storm damage is the last thing on your mind until it strikes. There are many tips on what to do in case a storm hits but what about after? Today, we want to focus on what NOT to do after the storm hits and water has gotten into your home:

  • Hang furs and leather goods. It is not a good idea to love them in place
  • Never leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet floors or carpets
  • Water removal requires advanced equipment – don’t us a household vacuum cleaner to remove water
  • Never use household appliances or turn the television on. The water most likely has soaked through the carpets and flooring. This may cause an electrical hazard.

These are all great tips to do until we arrive (which is pretty fast). For more information, give us a call at 909-399-9057.

Running Water Causing Damage in this Lawyer Office

1/22/2022 (Permalink)

Water Damage Our water damage technicians pulling out carpet and padding from this lawyer’s office to get all the wet unsalvageable material out.

When small amounts of water began to leak through the carpet, this law firm began to get suspicious. As the slow leak continued throughout the day, the staff began to really panic as all the towels in the office would not hold it down. By the time SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair got to the scene, the flood had continued to two more offices.

Our water technicians knew what to do. The water seeped very deep into the carpet including the carpet pad. Unfortunately, we could not save it since the water was sitting for about 24 hours before we were called in. The good news is that carpet and padding is very inexpensive and was a breeze to handle. After pulling out wet carpet, padding, extracting excess water and drying the affected rooms for 4 days, this lawyer’s office was as good as new.

An Un-relaxing Day at the Spa

1/22/2022 (Permalink)

Spa Damage at commercial building

When we think of the spa, we think of facials, manicures and the pedicures that relax us and makes us say ah! This was not the case when we received an emergency call from an Upland, California spa. In the wee hours of the morning and before they opened, our technicians could already tell that the hardwood flooring towards the back of the shop was beginning to buckle. In fact, ½ foot of the wall was beginning to swell from the bottom up. Our team immediately placed air movers and a dehumidifier near the areas that detected moisture.

The spa owner received a call from a neighboring business saying that there was water dripping from out of the front door. When the owner got to her place of business, the water heater had been leaking and there was water everywhere. She remembered us from a business card her friend gave to her and she gave us a call right away. It was great that she did because it saved her thousands of dollars in the long run.

If she had not called us when she did, she would have more than likely had mold beginning to grow. Good call! Avoiding more damage to your place of business or commercial building will always give you an “ah” of relief!

Tidying Up After the Central California Storms

1/22/2022 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Not a trace of ash or soot was found after this restoration job in Central California.

When the fires up in central California hit, it made this area even more vulnerable to extreme damage. Many of these homes experienced a lot of ash and soot from them. It was not the most ideal when the remainder of it all mixed in with the rain. This caused a very muddy and toxic mess for the homeowners.  Only the most experienced specialists were sent to the jobs requesting restoration help. They traveled from Claremont all the way up to the central part of the state in order help these homeowners in need.

Under the supervision of Dylan, the very experienced production manager of the team, every piece of debris was sucked up off lawns, water was professionally extracted, and ash was carefully removed by our advanced cleaning equipment.

We have not had a job that was too big, and we did not have our customers fully satisfied. Give us a call at 909-399-9057 and see how we can guide you with your emergency.

First Actions? What to Do...

1/22/2022 (Permalink)

After the storm has hit and gone, you and your family’s safety are always the #1 concern and priority. Here are a few things you can do to protect your loved ones from harm:

  • Wet materials can be very heavy. Be careful when picking them up.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to do.
  • Ask yourself if it is safe to stay in the house
  • Be careful. The most common concerns are electrical and “slip and fall” hazards
  • Keep away from outside walls and tall trees outside, as they may have been damaged by the storm.

We understand how stressful this event can be. Reach out to us at 909-399-9057 and we will guide you on what the next step is and what to do next.

One thing we cannot control is the weather. And while Mother Nature has a way of making storms wreak havoc, there are a few things to keep in mind. Before the big storm hits, be prepared in case there is an outage:

  • Check for any storm warnings and weather advisories
  • Have a battery – powered radio handy for the latest news
  • Keep a flashlight with new batteries close by
  • Add a non-electric can opener
  • Guarantee the flood supply of canned / packaged
  • Open the refrigerator as little as possible during outages. This way food will last longer.

The Lowest Prices for Restoration in Town

1/22/2022 (Permalink)

When it comes to fixing your water or fire damage, things can get pricey.

Sure, your home insurance will kick in to help cover the damage that occurred, but that may not always be the case. It is a heartbreaking situation to find out that your insurance policy does not cover 100% of the damage that happened to your home. Maybe there’s somewhere in the fine print that excludes the cause of loss, leaving you stressed and stuck with the bill.

Our restoration company has experienced this unfortunate situation time and time again. This is why the prices at SERVPRO of Claremont/Montclair are reasonable and affordable. We know how stressful these kinds of situations can be, which is why we keep our prices with our customers in mind. We offer self-pay services if for any reason the bill is not fully covered. Does Your Home or Business Have A Mold Problem?

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

    • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
    • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
    • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
    • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
    • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
    • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Carpet Cleaning After Your Holiday Parties

12/4/2021 (Permalink)

Carpet cleaning - red wine spilled Don't Worry! We can take care of the wine spills!

As Microbiologists have proven, carpets can hold a lot of bacteria, various bugs, and can become visually stained with ease. SERVPRO's best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with dirt/soil/bacteria. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the carpet fibers. If you wait until your carpets become too dirty, the carpets may never be brought back to their former appearance. Side Fact: If you spill red wine on your carpet, the best course of action is to pour white wine on top, this creates the initial condition of the red wine making it easier to remove. Then dab with paper towel. Repeat process until stain is removed.

Have pet stains? Spilled juice on the wall-to-wall carpet? SERVPRO is here to help. Call us today. With over 1,700 Franchises nationwide, there’s a SERVPRO Professional nearby and ready to serve you!

The Nitty Gritty Mold Facts You Need to Know

4/19/2020 (Permalink)

The inside of a white closet with spots of black mold everywhere. Mold is considered a toxigenic fungi, meaning they have potential to produce toxins. If you suspect mold of any kind, give us a call.

There are so many warnings (and many fears) about black mold. This alarming type, also referred to as “toxic mold,” can cause trouble to both your building and health. The truth is, the words black and toxic are used interchangeably in most cases when it comes to it. Let’s discuss the facts about what it is and the myths behind it.

Stachybot-What?

One fact to point out is that stachybotrys chartarum, the only name professionals call it by, really is quite fatal to people’s health. It can produce allergens and irritants that are just down right bad for us.

How Can I Tell If It Is Black Mold?

There are many types of mold that can cause reactions. In fact, there are more than 100,000 different species of mold that can have black in color. This kind of mold has a greenish-black color and sometimes even have a greyish soot-like color. It is also known to be slimy or wet.

Some types of them can cause more harm than others, too. Give us a call immediately if you suspect there is any kind of mold in your home or business. Our team of mold remediators will inspect the affected area for you.

Is Toxic or Not?

It is true, black mold can be harmful but only if it is stimulated. Most molds are toxigenic, which means they can produce toxins. Therefore, it is important to remember not to touch or disturb mold. Let a professional take care of it for you.

If you think you may be experiencing black or any other kind of mold, please contact us at 909-399-9057.

Drywall that has been demolished off of the wall with spots of mold. If you find mold make sure to NEVER disturb it. Doing so may cause possible health issues. Call the experts instead to take care of the problem.

Mold can begin to grow and become a problem for your home or business in as little as 24-48 hours. It thrives off porous materials like drywall, insulation, carpets and ceiling tiles. Some of the benefits of mold remediation include

  • Avoiding potentially serious health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth altogether
  • Saving money on furnishings and remodeling necessities
  • Prevention of damage to your home that can get expensive

With almost 10 years of experience, our mold technicians are trained and certified to remediate mold in your home or office. If mold is discovered, we recommend giving us a call at 909-399-9057 and follow these guidelines until help arrives:

  • Stay away from the affected area/s of the building
  • Turn off all HVAC and fan systems

Do not disturb the mold for it can be hazardous to your health by doing so.

Water Heater Maintenance Tips

4/19/2020 (Permalink)

A leaky water heater causing rust and water damage. If water heaters are not maintained properly, water damage is almost always guaranteed.

Our team at SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair always want to help our community out with tips and tricks on upkeeping things around the house and office. Today we have a few tips everyone can benefit from with your water heater.

Turn Power Off

The first rule of thumb – safety is always first. Before doing any maintenance on your water heater, shut the power off at the service panel. Leaking water can possible seep into carpets, flooring, baseboards and walls of your home or office. If this is not treated right away, it will even start to flow throughout the entire structure.

Check Every 3 Months

Maintaining your water heater is the secret. Once every 3 months, drain one gallon of water from the tank. If you have hard water, do this every month to reduce sediment collecting at the bottom of the tank.

Inspections and Replacements

Another key tip that could potentially save you some dough is to have a water heater technician inspect your water heater once every 2 years. Don’t forget that every 5 years, it is best to replace the anode rod by a certified service technician.

Cleaning Up the Demolition Aftermath

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

A technician dressed in a PPE suit cleaning up demoltion. Each technician on our crew has been professionally trained to perform demolition the right way.

This was a big job we took care of after the rains had stopped. The moisture from all the rainfall made the mold grow rapidly, which spread throughout the walls and ceiling. Our professionals cut through a wet wall and discovered that not only was the drywall affected, there was also thick plaster behind it as well. They decided the best tactic was to demolish the wall and make sure all mold was removed in their living space to make sure it didn’t spread anywhere else.

After thoroughly demolishing through the drywall and plaster in not one but two rooms of the house, the next step was to completely clean the area to make sure there was no trace of the work being done. We made sure to clean up every inch of the rooms including dust, dirt, drywall and plaster pieces. We triple checked the area to make sure there wasn’t a spec of debris left by our techs. Our team used commercial grade vacuums to pick up everything that was left over. Even the biggest messes are not match for SERVPRO of Claremont/Montclair.

The Difference Between Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

Two firemen putting out a house fire. One thing is for sure, both smoke detectors and fire alarms save lives each year.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a smoke detector and a fire alarm? Is it the same thing? They both have very important roles in your home and place of business. Today we are demystifying these two life savers and looking at why they should be hanging on everyone’s wall or ceiling.

Smoke Detectors:

As you read on, you will discover that both of these essential gadgets tell its own story in the name. To put it simply, a smoke detector can tell if there is smoke or fire in its earliest stages. This is terrific to have for several reasons including an alarm that goes off at the earliest sign of smoke. This alarm can avoid smoke inhalation for people, which causes more deaths than a fire itself. A smoke detector allows people in the surrounding area to evacuate immediately, hence saving lives. An inexpensive device like this can play a major role in the safety of your workplace and loved ones.

Fire Alarms:

The beauty of fire alarms is that they have the ability to monitor any changes in the environment related to combustion. Just like smoke detectors, fire alarms can sense when smoke is around too. This is where the confusion starts between the two-not only can fire alarms detect smoke, they can also activate the fire sprinkler system and alert the fire department. You will usually find these amazing gadgets in commercial buildings like apartments, high rise buildings and warehouses.

Knowing the difference is very important and can potentially save lives. If a recent fire has caused bad smoke odors in your home or workplace, we can help. Call our office at 909-399-9057 to have one of our technicians visit your home today.

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

A technician pulling out the carpet padding from an office. Our water damage technicians pulling out carpet and padding from this lawyer’s office to get all the wet un-salvageable material out.

  • Keep movement in the home to a minimum. Constant moving will embed soot particles into carpet and upholstery
  • Wash any soot from chrome appliances including faucets and any trip. Then lightly coast these surfaces with a small amount of lubricant.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on all house plants. They most likely have ash on them.

DON’T

  • Attempt to wash any walls without contacting a SERVPRO expert
  • Attempt to clean or shampoo a carpet until professional help arrives
  • Eat any food or beverages that may have been stored near fire, water or heat – they may be contaminated

Please contact us at 909-399-9057 for more information, we would love to help.

Photo: The aftermath of a fire is even worse than you think. Minimize the amount of movement inside the house, as the soot can seep into your upholstery.

Maintenance to Your Water Heater Will Keep Savings in Your Wallet

3/26/2020 (Permalink)

Water heater that has been damaged. Water damage can get ugly if the water heater is not checked every so often. Let our IICRC certified techs take care of it for you.

Water heater maintenance can sound intimidating. The fact that it has high potential for water leaks can make a homeowner or renter like yourself think differently. When it is well maintained and checked often, you can reduce high costs in the long run.

The first thing to keep your eyes peeled for are leaks. Has it just begun? Is there mold already growing around the area of the leak? If so, we highly recommend having a professional inspect it as soon as possible.

If there aren’t any leaks, follow these instructions to make your water heater as efficient as possible. Once every 3 months, drain a gallon of water from the tank. If you know you have hardwater, we suggest doing this every month. Doing this will reduce the sediment that blocks the barrier between the heating elements in your water heater. Blocking it will slow down the heating of showers, laundry and dishwasher.

Every 5 years, it is best to replace the anode rod inside your water heater. This can easily be installed by a professional technician. In fact, we recommend a water heater technician to inspect your water heater once every 2 years. This will prolong the life of your water heater and keep your wallet happy.

Top 3 Common Mistakes About Mold

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

A piece of drywall on the floor with mold growing on it. When you see mold in your home, the best thing to do is to not disturb it and call a professional restoration company.

Have you ever called “the experts” just to have each company give you different answers about mold?

Today we’re digging deep and answering the top 3 common mistakes and false claims customers hear all the time. We are setting the facts straight because it is important to know what to do in case you discover mold in your home or office. And trust us, we have heard them all!

Common mistake #1: Mold can be killed with bleach.

This is a big no-no. Although there are many great home remedies out there, you cannot “kill” mold with bleach. In fact, you can do a lot more harm than good. When bleach is poured over mold, it disrupts the mold and activates tiny particles called mold spores. These mold spores are airborne and can be in very unhealthy if inhaled. According to OSHA, “the use of a biocide, such as chlorine bleach, is not recommended as a routine practice during mold remediation.” The only way to reduce mold is to have restoration experts perform mold remediation.

Common mistake #2: Only black mold is dangerous

Even though black mold is very unhealthy, it is not the only mold that can raise health concerns. In fact, there are more than 100,000 species of mold spores known worldwide. Some of these species are not harmful at all, while others can be deadly. Who’s to say which is which when you have mold growing in your family room or work space. Overall, all mold should be left undisturbed and remediated the moment it is discovered.

Common mistake #3: Your home or office will be “mold-free”

This is a big misconception about mold. The truth is microscopic mold spores exist everywhere naturally, including indoors and outdoors. Because of this, it is impossible to remove 100% of mold. Take into consideration that these mold spores that are floating in the air can enter your home and office through A/C units, heaters, windows, doors, pets and even clothing.

The more facts you know about mold, the better off you will be in choosing the best restoration company for you. If you would like more information on mold growing in your living space, please do not hesitate to call the experts at 909-399-9057 SERVPROclaremontmontclair.com/ today.

Mold Grows Where You Least Expect It

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

An old, leaky, dirty water heater . This is a prime example of where mold can grow.

Picture coming home from a nice, long well-deserved vacation when suddenly you get a whiff of an unpleasant smell. The musty, wet odor of mold invades your nostrils while you frantically try and find where it's coming from. When the smell leads you to the water heater, you see that an ongoing leak has made the perfect bed for a colony of mold. Yikes! So, now what?

Although mold grows everywhere, having it grow inside your home is never good. Mold may be very unhealthy for you and everyone that lives in your home. When water damage is near, mold is not far behind if it isn’t taken care of immediately. In fact, mold will grow within 24-48 hours of a waterpipe leak. This also means anything else that can potentially leak in your home including the kitchen sink and behind the toilet.

Don’t let mold stress you out. The experts here at SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair will eliminate the mold in your home or office. Our experienced technicians will always let you know the process in detail. We make it easy for you to understand what we’re doing every step of the way. When it comes to fixing your water or fire damage, things can get pricey.

How important is it to Clean Your Air Ducts and HVAC?

12/13/2019 (Permalink)

The inside of a very dirty and dusty air vent. Overtime, air ducts collect dust. This makes the perfect place for bacteria, allergens and even mold to grow.

Cleaning the air duct system is essential to breathing clean, fresh air in your home and office. It can just as easily be forgotten about – until the dust and allergens begin to disrupt the air quality. How can you tell if your HVAC system needs cleaning? One factor to look out for is if every time you turn on your air conditioner unit or heater, a small amount of dust blows out. Another thing to look out for is a musty smell coming from the air ducts.

You may be asking if it is really that necessary to clean the air ducts. We here at SERVPRO Claremont / Montclair want you to know it is extremely important. Fine particles of dust collect on the surfaces of vents, coils and motors. This makes the perfect breeding place for bacteria to run amuck. Over time, allergens, dander from pets, hair and even mold can grow in HVAC systems. Those who have allergies, or experience unexplained symptoms, can also be indications that your air ducts need to be cleaned.

If there is smoke from nearby fires around, we highly recommend having your air ducts and HVAC system cleaned. Just like smoke, ash and soot can easily blow through the air and into your units. This can be a definite health hazard and is unhealthy to breathe in for anyone.

To prevent this from happening, it is important to periodically check how your air ducts are doing. If they require a thorough cleaning, schedule an appointment at 909-399-9057.

An Unrelaxing Day at the Spa

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

After placing air movers and a dehumidifier in this spa, we saved the hardwood floor and drywall and prevented mold from growing.

Hot Oil and Fire Just Don’t Add Up

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

A small kitchen fire turned into something bigger. This is the aftermath of a pan on fire being thrown out this luxury apartment.

Looking at the damage a fire does to someone’s home is heartbreaking. Not to mention what it does to the tenant’s emotional state of mind. This was true for the tenants of this luxury apartment. The young couple living here was cooking dinner and the oil, when suddenly some of the oil contacted the fire. This caused an instant fire to the pan. Out of panic, they ran to the front door and threw it out. Unfortunately, this made matters worse and ignited another fire.

Our fire technicians lucky enough saved everything they could including a lot of the drywalls and furniture. About 4 days later, the entire apartment looked like an entirely different place. The tenants had tears of joy instead of from the traumatic experience. They were very thankful, and the property manager vowed to use us again in case an emergency ever happened again.

Cigarette Fire in Rancho Cucamonga

6/7/2019 (Permalink)

Accidents happen. If you have recently experienced a fire in your home, give us a call and set up an appointment with us.

Fuzzies Under the Kitchen Sink

5/23/2019 (Permalink)

From the looks of it, mold began growing right under this sink.

It seemed like the end of the road for this kitchen sink. After receiving a phone call explaining the damage under this sink, we went out to inspect it at once. After the musky smell had settled, the mold technicians found the green and black fuzzy stuff everywhere. We had our client sign some paperwork and got to work immediately.

After we contained the affected area, our technicians put on their PPE suits and masks and tackled the problem area. After some minor demolition (only the bottom of the sink) and a few air scrubbers to clean the air of mold spores, this kitchen was saved.

Mold can be found in moisture prone areas of the home and office including under sinks, ceilings (where pipes run through), water heaters and even behind the washer and dryer. Give us a ring at 909-399-9057 to schedule an inspection with us today.

Corroded Pipes Can Only Mean One Thing…

5/21/2019 (Permalink)

Don’t let a broken pipe create so much moisture that mold begins to grow! Give us a call and let our experts look at the damage today.

When you begin to see water emerging from the kitchen floor, or when there is water coming from the ceiling of your two-story home, that is probably because an old pipe has cracked. After time, pipes throughout the home (and even places of business) will corrode and eventually crack over time. After the water has emerged up and into your home or office, it will cause moisture – the breeding ground of mold.

Before mold has a shot at rapidly growing and running amuck, it can be avoided by taking care of the leak immediately. After a plumber has stopped the leak, our air movers will completely dry all moisture. This will avoid any mold issues or musky smells from happening. Of course, each phone call we receive from customers are unique and it goes by a case by case basis. But whatever the situation may be, rest assured that we will solve your water damage issue before it gets any worse. Give our office a call at 909-399-9057 to schedule an inspection with one of our technicians and give us a try.

Power Washing a Mudslide Out of a Garage

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

After removing the frozen mud out of this homeowner’s garage, we did a power wash to make sure it was completely out.

The continuous rains has done some damage throughout the mountain area including Big Bear. The unfortunate thing about rain in the mountains is that it freezes. When the sun comes out, it melts the snow and turns back into its liquid form which can cause big problems for homeowners and business owners alike. One of the Big Bear residents suffered not only the excess water in his garage, but also mud that froze in it.

Our team of technicians strategized on how we could take it out. Finally, we found the easiest way to do it is to do it the old fashion way-start shoveling it out. Once all mud was removed, we removed the affected area of the walls that could not be saved, and power washed it down. This job was one of the more challenging ones because of the frozen mud, but we completed it in no time and got this homeowner’s cabin back to the way it was.

We Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

Our technician went under the house in the crawlspace to remove wet, molded insulation.

From attics full of vermin to crawlspaces under the house, SERVPRO of Claremont/Montclair’s remediation technicians go where no one else will. We get to the bottom of the problem and will usually fine where the cause of loss is coming from. We gear up in our PPE (personal protective equipment) suits, put our specialty filtered masks on to prevent inhaling toxic spores and are ready to go.

This particular home had an old pipe crack under a bedroom, where a leak began. All insulation had to be removed since it was soaked and had begun to grow mold. We sprayed our special formulated antimicrobial spray all along the affected areas to make sure mold did not grow back. After the work was done, this homeowner was thrilled to see that the leak was no longer costing him time, headaches and money.

Bringing Down Moldy Insulation in an Ontario Warehouse

5/14/2019 (Permalink)

A shot of our remediation specialist cleaning up debris from the molded insulation.

When we first scoped out the 12,000 square foot warehouse for mold, we began thinking of the strategies we would use to remove it from the ceiling. The warehouse had a roof leak that was never discovered until it was too late. The leak had absorbed the insulation in the ceiling, which caused the mold to grow throughout the entire area. After a detailed overview of the tasks that needed to get this commercial building back to its original state, we got to work fast (since mold can grow from moisture within 24-48 hours).

We began the mold remediation process by first gearing up in our PPE suits. From head to toe, our remediation technicians are covered to protect them from any mold spores floating in the air. These mold spores will float in the air once the mold is disturbed. We brought in a cherry picker to help us bring down the insulation throughout the roof. At the end of this challenging job, all affected insulation and mold was removed. After the owner of the building did a walk through with us, he was very pleased with the work we did.

If you are experiencing a mold problem, do not hesitate to give us a call at 909-399-9057 to schedule an inspection.

When the Snow Storm Passes, the Water Damage Stays

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

A mudslide invaded this Big Bear home. Luckily, our team of experts were all over it.

The rain and snowfall looked never ending for the mountain communities that make up Big Bear and Big Bear Lake, California. This is just a glimpse of the 1,000 homes that were affected by water damage, mud slides and mold. There was a lot of work to be done on this specific house including a pack out of all the contents both inside and out, removing all the mud that invaded the home from the mudslide, detail cleaning as well as a pack in of their personal belongings. This was no easy task to get this home back to the way it was, but nothing is impossible for our team. Our client was overjoyed with the results of her home and thanked us-the most valuable thing we cherish.

Saving an Ontario Commercial Warehouse from Water Damage

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Our technician extracting water from the carpet of a commercial warehouse. The faster we extract the water, the faster we restore.

When we arrived at the commercial warehouse building in Ontario, California, the entire carpet was saturated with water. Employees on the graveyard shift were trying to grab a product from a high level with a fork lift, but accidentally hit a water sprinkler and it went off. Our water technicians immediately got to work to try and save as much of the carpet as possible. We used our water extraction wands to suck out all standing water that soaked the flooring and used air movers to dry it all until it was dry completely.

The owners of the building called us immediately, which was a great thing on there end. Since we were called as early as possible, we were able to save the entire commercial carpet without removing the padding under it and ripping it out. The owner was so happy to hear that we restored as much as possible and they actually saved a lot of money. When an emergency strikes, do not wait on it and give us a call at 909-399-9057. We can help your commercial warehouse building too day or night.

Water Heater Maintenance Tips and Upkeeping

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

The Nitty Gritty Facts about Black Mold

4/9/2019 (Permalink)

Running Water Causing Damage in this Lawyer Office

4/8/2019 (Permalink)

Our water damage technicians pulling out carpet and padding from this lawyer’s office to get all the wet unsalvageable material out.

The Difference Between Smoke Detectors and Fire Alarms

4/3/2019 (Permalink)

Small and inexpensive, smoke detectors and fire alarms can potentially avoid fires like this one and save lives.

Cleaning Up the Demolition Aftermath

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

Our technicians clean the post demolition debris thoroughly.

Maintain Your Water Heater, Keep Your Wallet Happy

3/26/2019 (Permalink)

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

When you see mold in your home, the best thing to do is to not disturb it and call a professional restoration company.

Have you ever called “the experts” just to have each company give you different answers about mold? Today we’re digging deep and answering the top 3 common mistakes and false claims customers hear all the time. We are setting the facts straight because it is important to know what to do in case you discover mold in your home or office. And trust us, we have heard them all!

Common mistake #1: Mold can be killed with bleach.

This is a big no-no. Although there are many great home remedies out there, you can not “kill” mold with bleach.

If you would like more information on mold growing in your living space, please do not hesitate to call the experts at 909-399-9057 or visit us at https://www.SERVPROclaremontmontclair.com/ today.

Reversing Water Damage Since 2009

3/20/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can get ugly, especially when it is leaking from the roof. Let our IICRC certified techs restore it for you.

When we first began our restoration business back in 2009, it was our family’s dream to bring peace of mind to business owners and homeowners alike. When water damage happens, it always happens without notice. That is where SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair comes into the picture. Each water damage situation is unique, which is why our IICRC certified technicians are prepared for any size disaster. We will begin the drying process as soon as we can and every 24 hours, a technician will go out and check up on it to see how it is doing. This information will be documented in a drying diary. Each day, we can see the progress of the wet area by documenting the temperature and humidity of it. This cycle will continue for as little as 10 days, or until we dry it completely. This way, mold does not have a chance to grow-which can be costly.

A Musky Smell Can Only Mean One Thing…

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

When a leak is present, mold will flourish. It takes as little as 48 hours for mold to grow into colonies.

Picture coming home from a nice, long well-deserved vacation when suddenly you get a whiff of an unpleasant smell.

The musty, wet odor of mold invades your nostrils while you frantically try and find where its coming from. When the smell leads you to the water heater, you see that an ongoing leak has made the perfect bed for a colony of mold. Yikes! So, now what?

Although mold grows everywhere, having it grow inside your home is never good. Mold can be very unhealthy for you and everyone that lives in your home.

We work with all insurance companies and will work with you too. Give us a call at 909-399-9057 and schedule an appointment with us-let us worry about the mold so you don’t have to.

How Important Is Air Duct and HVAC Cleaning?

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

Over time, hair, pet dander, allergens and even mold can grow in HVAC systems.

With SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair’s secret wood cleaning formula, this worry is a thing of the past. How a Deep Cleaning Can Eliminate Carpet Bacteria

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Deep cleaning your carpet will sanitize it from bacteria, allergens and dirt stuck within.

A Household Vacuum Cleaner Just Isn't Enough.

There is more in a carpet than the eye leads us to believe. The carpet in your home or office can become the breeding ground for bacteria – let alone a homey place for allergens (and even pet dander/urine from our furry family members) if not cleaned properly. Sometimes, it takes a lot more than just a household vacuum to save the day. If you took a microscope and looked deep down into the microfibers, you would discover everything the everyday vacuum missed. These vacuums can also be a menace by blowing dirt and germs back into the air we breathe. In fact, the dirt we see on our carpet is only at the very top. Yikes!

With tools like our commercial grade extraction wands, SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair offers deep carpet cleaning services. These extraction wands get deep inside your carpet, sucking up the bacteria that can cause allergies or worse, an unhealthy space. Our extracting process with SERVPRO’s “magic wand” and specially formulated shampoo eliminates odors too, allowing your home or office to smell fresh and clean.

Our vast supply of disinfectants, deodorizers and powerful stain removers will make sure your carpet is sanitized without the stains. To book an appointment, give our office a call at 909-399-9057.

Deep Clean Your Tough Carpet Stains Away

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Sanitize your carpet and get rid of the pet dander, bacteria and germs for good with our deep cleaning carpet services.

Get Those Tough Stains Out - Finally!

It is never too early to begin “spring cleaning” aka detail cleaning your home or business. This goes for every carpet in each room. Think about it – when we walk outside, our shoes pick up dirt and debris. This can be carried onto our carpets as we walk across them daily. If there are toddlers or small children in the home, we set up play areas for them – on the carpet. They learn to crawl and walk also on the carpet…you get the picture. We use our carpets all the time, yet it never crosses our minds that allergens, bacteria and pet dander can be lurking in it. A soiled carpet is the perfect place for bacteria to breed and spread.

Now, you may be thinking “I vacuum all the time, this doesn’t apply to my carpet.” This is where many of us have been misinformed. The soiled stains from juice, wine and pets are still there and unfortunately, a household vacuum cleaner only grabs dirt from the very top of a carpet. In order to get your carpet fully cleaned, you will need a deep cleaning like the service we offer. With SERVPRO’s deep cleaning services, all the dander, soiled spots, tough stains and germs will be eliminated.

We here at SERVPRO of Claremont / Montclair advise you to have all carpets deep cleaned at least every 6 months. With our state-of-the-art sanitizers, deodorizers and stain removers, our technicians will give you peace of mind that your carpet is completely clean. For more information on our deep cleaning carpet services, give us a call at 909-399-9057 and schedule an appointment today.

Know Where To Shutoff Water Valves

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

Whether you're the homeowner or just renting, its always a good idea to know where the shutoff valves are in case an emergency occurs.

Shut off water valves in case of emergency.

Knowing where the shutoff valves are throughout your home and business can save you a whole lot of time and headaches. It is handy to know each one’s whereabouts, in case any flooding occurs or water overflow of any kind happens. It is also good to know how to turn off each of the valves, even if it is just for routine maintenance. We will go over some common valves you will find in your home or business and show you how to turn them off.

The Meter - The meter is commonly found in residential homes towards the curb, near the street. It controls where your local city’s water begins and where it divides in your property. If you lift the lid, you will find the shut-off to the meter box, which controls the water of both the interior and exterior of the residence. This includes sinks, showers, sprinkler systems and pools, just to name a few.

Main Service – Located at the “main service”, a water line goes up to the front of the house and connects to the hose bib or water spigot. If it can’t be found there, try looking in the garage too. Shutting it off will turn off the water inside your home, but not disturb irrigation outside.

Water Heater – The water in your water heater is given by the “main service” line. You can find the shutoff valve at the very top, next to the water flex lines.

Locating and shutting off the water supply is crucial if an emergency occurs. With a little bit of preparation, knowledgeable homeowners and business owners can have peace of mind.

An Ontario Sprinkler Flood

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

An employee accidently set the sprinkler system off, flooding this distribution center and damaging goods.

When the sprinklers go off accidently in a 35,000 square foot distribution center in Ontario, California, the situation can be very worrisome and stressful. After an employee erroneously set the system in the warehouse off, there was water and damaged product everywhere. Within hours of the incident, the Claremont team was there inspecting the incident and tending to the owner’s questions and concerns. We made sure that all updates and information was shared with the client, so that we would always be on the same page. We immediately began extracting the water from the building and dried every last drop of liquid found in it. Because the company called us as soon as they could, they avoided further damage hence saving a lot of cash in the end. When an emergency strikes, we are here on standby to give you a helping hand. Give us a call at 909-399-9057 to see how we can help your business day or night.

This is what this Claremont resident went through after discovering a pipe had broken and spouted out water. In these instances, our equipment we use is unlike any other. Benefits and Tips on Mold

4/13/2018 (Permalink)

If mold is found, it is best not to disturb it. Doing so can possibly cause major health issues.

It is fascinating that in only 48 hours, mold can quickly begin to grow and become a problem in your home or business. If you come across a strange greenish fuzz growing in a dark, moist place – it is more than likely that pesky mold. Besides possessing an unpleasant musky smell, mold is a concern to have around you and your loved ones. Some of the benefits of mold remediation include:

  • Prevent damage to your home that can be very costly
  • Saves money on furnishings and remodeling necessities
  • Avoid potentially serious health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth altogether

With almost 10 years of experience, our remediation specialists are trained and certified by the IICRC Certified Firm. If mold is discovered, we recommend giving us a call at 909-399-9057 and do the following tips until help arrives:

  • Stay away from the affected area/s of the building
  • Turn off all HVAC and fan systems

Do not disturb the mold, for it can be hazardous to your health if it is disturbed

Water Heater Maintenance

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Maintaining you water heater regularly can avoid leaks leading to a whole lot of disaster.

We here at SERVPRO Claremont / Montclair wanted to discuss a few water heater maintenance tips with you. You will see by how you and your entire family can benefit from them. The first rule of thumb: safety is always first. Before doing any maintenance on your water heater, shut the power off at the service panel.

Leaking water can possibly seep into the carpets, flooring, baseboards and walls of your home or office.  If not treated right away, it will even start to flow throughout the entire structure.

Maintaining is the secret. Once every 3 months, drain one gallon of water from the tank. If you have hard water, do this every month to reduce sediment collecting at the bottom of the tank.

Another key tip that could potentially save you some dough is to have a water heater technician inspect your water heater once every 2 years. Don’t forget every five years, it is best to replace the anode rod by a certified service technician.

Be Stormed Prepared

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Being prepared with a battery operated flashlight in your storm kit will be most beneficial when an emergency hits.

  • Always keep a two-week water supply for every person in your household

If a storm has already hit, please reach out to us at 909-399-9057 so we can help you on what to do next.

Tidying Up After the Central California Storms

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Not a trace of ash or soot was found after this restoration job in Central California.

Storm Damage and What NOT To Do

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Never attempt to vacuum water up with a household vacuum cleaner. Leave the dirty work to us!

The Facts About Black Mold

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

All species of mold including black mold, can be found in dark, moist places.

There are so many warnings (and many fears) about black mold. This alarming type, also referred to as “toxic mold,” can cause trouble to both your building and health. The truth is, the words black and toxic are used interchangeably in most cases when it comes to it. Today we are discussing the facts about what it is and the myths behind it.

Stachybot-What?

One fact to point out is that stachybotrys chartarum, the only name professionals call it by, really is quite fatal to a human’s health. It can produce allergens and irritants that are just down right bad for us.

How Can I Tell If It Is Black Mold?

The best answer to this: There are many types of mold that can cause reactions.

Is Toxic or Not?

It is true, black mold can be pretty harmful but only if it is stimulated. Most molds are toxicgenic, which means they can produce toxins. Therefore, it is important to remember not to touch or disturb mold. Let a professional take care of it for you.

If you think you may be experiencing black or any other kind of mold, please contact us at 909-399-9057.

The Dos and Donts of Fire Safety

4/9/2018 (Permalink)

If the damage is done from a fire, make sure to move as little as possible. Movement can make soot absorb into your upholstery and furniture.

If fire has already struck your home, we are here to help you. If the damage is done from a fire, we would like to suggest to you a few things that make things easier for you until we arrive.

DO

  • Keep movement in the home to a minimum. Constant moving will embed soot particles into carpet and upholstery
  • Wash any soot from chrome appliances including faucets and any trim. Then lightly coat these surfaces with a small amount of lubricant.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on all house plants. They most likely have ash on them.

DON’T

  • Attempt to wash any walls without contacting a SERVPRO expert
  • Attempt to clean or shampoo a carpet until professional help arrives
  • Eat any food or beverages that may have been stored near fire, heat or water – they may be contaminated

The Difference Between a Smoke Detector and a Fire Alarm

4/7/2018 (Permalink)

A smoke detector can detect early signs of smoke and potentially save lives.

The great news is that by following a few easy steps, you can help prevent any accidents while keeping your family and guests safe. So, the next backyard bash you throw, consider these steps:

  • Use sturdy candle holders that won’t tip over
  • Consider battery operated or flameless candles instead. They give off a nice glow and are great alternatives
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from open flames
  • Always have an adult present when a controlled fire is burning

The Facts and Fiction of Mold

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is very common in dark, moist places.

There is so much information about mold out there, it may be hard to know what fiction is and what is fact. One major fact to remember, is that mold can’t be eliminated 100 percent because it grows and exists everywhere. Here are a few major facts about mold and how to prevent it from taking over your home:

  • All sources of water or moisture must be addressed before mold remediation can begin. If not, the mold can return.
  • A strong, musky smell is produced when mold is present and can help you detect where problem areas are
  • Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent. Any humidity higher than that can support the growth of mold

Your friendly SERVPRO of Claremont/Montclair staff is here for all your mold remediation needs. With tedious training, years of expertise and the right equipment at hand, our mold remediation services will help take control of any mold infestation in no time. We are even known to make it look "Like it never even happened."

Remediation Versus Removal of Mold

3/30/2018 (Permalink)

Even though mold can grow anywhere, it can't be 100% eliminated.

Mold can grow anywhere. In fact, these microscopic mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere – including where we work and live. Whether it is a commercial building or a residential house, it is important to know that it is impossible to get rid of all mold from your home or business. The best thing to do for a mold problem is mold remediation. This process will reduce the mold spore count back to its baseline level or “natural state.”

Because some restoration businesses advertise and go as far as guarantee “mold removal,” consider these mold facts before falling for the other guys’ misconceptions:

  • Mold spores are microscopic and float through the air, entering your home through doors, windows or AC/heating systems
  • These mold spores can even hitch a ride indoors on your pet or clothing
  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture and when exposed to water, can quickly grow into colonies. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

If you have a mold problem in your home or business, we can inspect and assess your property.

Hardwood Floors to All-Wooden Doors

12/20/2017 (Permalink)

Refinishing a hardwood floor.

Hardwood flooring and wooden doors/trim can give any house a beautiful, warm touch. But keeping them shiny, and scratch free can be a difficult feat. Here's some tips to help you with the upkeep of your wood floor and decor. The first step would be to use a soft dust mop or vacuum to remove dirt, dust, pet hair, and any other debris that could potentially scratch the floor. Since this doesn't remove built-up grime, scuff marks, and minor scratches. We suggest a commercial grade, liquid floor cleaner (You can also make your own cleaner by mixing one part vinegar to 10 parts warm water. Then add a few drops of liquid Castile soap and viola, homemade floor cleaning). For other deep scratches, dark scuff marks, and faded hardwood flooring, Call your local SERVPRO today. See what we can do for you!

Cleaning Your Air Ducts, Is it Really ?That Important?

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Ever think about what inside your air vents could look like?

Did you know that, in certain circumstances, Duct Cleaning can increase your efficiency by up to 40%? That's a lot of money back into your pocket every month. Duct Cleaning is a process that can differ depending on each air system we come across, but the end result is the same... clean-air, and a more healthy home and atmosphere. We use special equipment to ensure safety of the air quality in your home. This includes special filters, ventilation equipment, containment barriers, and more. (For safety reasons, professional duct cleaning is often performed when your home is unoccupied, such as nights and weekends)

Here are some preventative actions you can take to reduce your need for Duct Cleaning.

Carpet Cleaning 101

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

Our "Magic Wand" that makes dirt, bacteria, and various carpets bugs disappear.

Carpet flooring is essential to most-any home, yet is often found to be the most bacteria ridden place. We usually suggest getting carpets thoroughly cleaned at least once every 6 months. Yet most people either never, or very rarely even think of it at all. (and no, vacuuming does not count as Carpet Cleaning). The air blown from a standard household vacuum if often a beacon, just shooting out germs into breathing air. Side Fact: The "Five-Second Rule" is a myth and it is proven that on carpet, bacteria can live and thrive for more than four weeks... that's more like 2,419,200 seconds.

Now, these facts are not to scare people. But to more inform everyone of the safety hazards (including bacteria build-up), and some simple way to minimize exposure, and keep YOUR home clean!

SERVPRO offers a Deep Carpet Cleaning. Using only state-of-the-art equipment, the most powerful stain removers, disinfectants, and deodorizers. Contact your local SERVPRO for a quote now!

Carpet Cleaning 101

Oh no! Red Wine on the White Carpet.

Does Your Home or Business Have A Mold Problem?

3/30/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Claremont/Montclair Smoke and Soot Cleanup

3/30/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home or Business

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
